Joris Van Cauter obtained his master's degree in moral sciences from Ghent University in 1998. 

In 2002 he obtained his master's degree in law, also from the University of Ghent.

In 2002, lawyer Joris Van Cauter joined the Ghent bar under the tutelage of Filip D'Hont.

From September 1, 2003, to September 1, 2011, he worked at the Rieder & Verdonck firm. He became a partner there on September 1, 2008 (Rieder, Verdonck & Van Cauter firm). On September 1, 2011, he established his own firm.

Joris Van Cauter is active in all facets of criminal law. He often handles large and media-sensitive cases. He is known for his technical and scientific approach.

Joris Van Cauter holds the certificate 'special training in cassation procedure in criminal cases'.

He is also a publicist for De Standaard and De Morgen.
